Pleasant Street–Making progress

The conservation of the Claronell Smith-Griffin House is well under way with new sills and the removal of the front porch.

Our contractor, Michael Conroy was impressed at the historic post and beam construction. Very few houses in Gainesville are built like this.

Hi everyone;

I hope you all received your Pleasant Street Historic Society newsletter. If you have not received your newsletter please let me know and I will send one to you.

Our Annual Meeting will be this Saturday at 4:00 PM at the Friendship Baptist Church 426 NW 2nd Street. Come early and park your car near the church and walk to many of the outstanding events that will be downtown on Saturday.

The Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk will start downtown at 9:00 AM, wind its way through the Duckpond Neighborhood and part of the Southeast Historic District and end in front of the Hippodrome. I am walking this year in honor of survivors Verdell Robinson, the Pleasant Street Historic Society’s vice president, and Mary Butler, the wife of our president Alvin Butler Jr. If you would like to make a donation to the American Cancer Society in their honor please let me know. You can make a donation with a credit card under my name online at the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event site in Gainesville, or give me a check at the Annual Meeting.

The next event you can walk to is the fabulous Friends of the Library book sale at 430 N. Main Street. Saturday is the first day of the book sale but it will last through Wednesday which is Dime Day. Half price day is Tuesday.

You can also walk to the Heart of Florida Asian Festival at the Thomas Center, which will be held on Sunday too if you don’t have time to attend it on Saturday.

The grand opening of the Doris Bardon Cultural Arts Center will be at 7:00 PM on Saturday evening too. I hope you all read the excellent article about it in the paper today. If not, you can read the Gainesville Sun article online.

Please be sure to bring some food to share with the other members since we will have a reception after the Annual meeting. If you have not mailed in your dues you may bring them to the meeting. I am happy to report that many people are paying at the dues level of $50 this year, and one person enclosed an additional $50 for the Smith-Griffin House. I am not sure if it is the beautiful new dues form that inspired people to contribute at a higher level than they usually do, or the information in the newsletter.

See you on Saturday!
