In a nutshell

The economist’s premise that “man prefers leisure and must be bribed to work,” is based on an insulting and self-serving moral judgement. This is not surprising when one considers that economic theorists were all impractical males who were looking for strategies to get others (mothers, wives, children, servants) to work for them. By expressing their theories in numerical formulas, they not only pretended to be scientific, but managed to maintain a self-serving fiction for over a century.
