Idolatry is not prompted by the idol. Celebrity is not prompted by the celebrant. Or is it? When the idol or celebrity is a person, does there not have to be at least tacit solicitation of the adoration?
What prompts idolatry? A desire to enhance self importance surreptitiously. Does praise of the idol or hero serve to disguise praise of the self. Because, of course, self-praise is worthless. So, we designate a surrogate. Surrogacy I have not sufficiently explored.
