“Representative democracy.” Is that one of those “vision things,” a figment of the imagination, not real? Given how often our status conscious neighbors use that phrase, one is tempted to conclude it means something other than “we, the people, govern and hire public servants to do what they are told.”
Perhaps the phrase “family values” provides an additional clue, a desire to extend “father knows best” and “in loco parentis” into the public realm.
In any event, it seems that one constant response to the negation of segregation and exclusion is just to extend the rejection to everyone. “If I cannot keep some individuals out, I will keep everyone out.”
EXCLUSION! It is a primitive response. Why can’t some humans get over it?
