Do not blame the country. The presumption of probity (that individual natural persons are moral beings) is a presumption, not fact. Historical evidence demonstrates that some humans ain’t human, as John Prine observed, but it is impossible to determine ahead of time. However, people who now call themselves Republicans have demonstrated for some time that they have little use for their own kind, except as exploitable resources. Indeed, referring to people as “resources” provides a hint that their socialization is just a veneer. The U.S. is a materialistic culture, nit because people lake material things, but because human beings are treated as if they were just material things that are available to be exploited and owned. And the judicial system supports that attitude.
