We have made a mistake in thinking that lust is solely related to sexual gratification. It is not. And, indeed, the lust for power is much stronger, especially when it turns obsessive, and, worse, unlike the lust for sex, the lust for power is never satisfied and has no natural terminus. It does not end, even briefly.
People in the grip of power are irrational. That explains the Cons.
Perhaps Con is not a good term, after all. They are not contrarians when it comes to power. However, while lust reaches out and aims to acquire, it may be that power is elusive, like a negatively charged particle never to be reached.
Perhaps conservation is a failed compromise, the hope that eventually the desired potency will be achieved.
