What a Dad Knows, etc

A funny (haha) thing happened a little earllier.

When I came in, there was a report on the TV about brand new, multi-zillion dollar equiptment that's s'posed to detect uranium being smuggled in to the country in container ships, whatever. The detectors don't work, of course. That is, they don't detect lightly shielded uranium worth a d@mn. They're great at detecting kitty litter, though. Kitty llitter emits gama rays, which the detectors detect just fine....

So, rather than railing about the waste of money etc., etc., for these detectors, my dad picked up on the kitty litter angle. "That's probably what causes kitty cancer." BTW one of ours has had two opperations for the feline equivalent of breast cancer, and so we're a bit more aware than we might othrwise be.

So, I said, "Probably. They could probably make it safer, but then the manufadturers wouldn't make so much money." Didn't know if he'd even hear me.

So, and here's the kicker, he said, "Spoken like a true Deaniac."

You could'a knocked me over with a feather. I didn't even know he knew the word "Deaniac!" Ya never know where ya might be having an effect.

"Just Three Convictions From The Presidency."

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
What Howard Dean really said at the Take Back America Conference:

" And it wasn't enough for the president to try to wreck the public pension system that we had. It wasn't enough for him to try to turn over Social Security to the same people who brought us Enron -- his good friends and political contributors -- that wasn't enough. Now we find out that under this president's watch, private pension plans have been grossly underfunded. What does this president want? Don't Americans deserve, after a long life of work, don't they deserve a retirement with dignity and security? I think that they do. (Cheers, applause.)

This week the Labor Department estimated that in 2004 underfunding of pension plans grew to $450 billion. Sixty percent of companies take advantage of outdated accounting rules to avoid making annual contributions. The president wants to take away our Social Security, and then he's going to take away the private pension plans too? What does he think ordinary Americans live on after they get to be 65 years old? We need a president who understands working people in this country, and we will have one after 2008.
