To the editor: Sen. Clinton is running new ads touting a kinder, gentler Hillary. She has trotted out her mom and daughter and personal friends to affirm that she is indeed human like us ordinaries — not the frigid, power-lusting, pushy female of Clinton legend, but a loving daughter and mother who, Mom says, “has empathy for other people’s unfortunate circumstances.”
When the (mainly) southern states were directed to stop providing public services on a segregated basis, some communities simply stopped providing the services at all. That public swimming pools were closed was pretty well publicized. What didn’t register, probably because it took longer, was the demise of public transportation (streetcar and bus lines were sold and then “permitted” to fail) and the transfer of community hospitals to the private sector which could weed out the undesirables by price.
The game of America is going badly. Seven losing seasons; lost years, in fact. And the reason is clear; the officiating stinks.
Imagine what would happen if the referee of the football game were to eject players on a whim. Imagine what would happen if the referee made up new rules on the spot. Imagine if the referee began calling the plays and reset the clock for a do-over to keep the players in mid-field. Imagine if he were to call the fans out of the stands to take up positions on the field because the players walked off in disgust. If it came out that the referee was in cahoots with the gamblers, it would explain some things. What it wouldn’t explain is how come the referee and the rest of the officials weren’t booted when this trashing of the rule book was first noted.
